EMPATHY TOOLS FRAMEWORK

Empathy tools are experiences designed to evoke an empathic response by placing the user in another’s lived and felt experience. Empathy and understanding, however, can be difficult for others outside of the affected group and empathy tool designers don't have a common vocabulary to use when evoking empathy for various situations. To address this issue, we analyzed 26 publications on empathy tools to develop a descriptive framework for designers of empathy tools.

EXPLORING NOTIFICATIONS WITH PEPPER'S GHOST ILLUSION

In this work, I explore a different method of gaining a user’s visual attention with Pepper’s Ghost optical illusion – called the Acquario display.

VISUALIZING DOG BREED DATA

For this project, I created a visualization inspired by nature for dog breed data to help people look for the dog breed that is best suited for them.

ACQUARIO

Acquario is an interactive, spatially aware personal cubic display that can be used as an interaction tool for visualizations. Acquario uses the Pepper’s ghost effect to transform a web-based visualization into a “holographic” visualization that can be interacted with using gestures, proximity or custom laser printed tangible objects with embedded NFC tags.

DIGITAL MEDIA DEEP SEA RELAXATION

This project explored relaxation techniques in digital media through the development of a nature emersion art installation piece.

UTILIZING PROJECTED PIXELS IN A RETAIL ENVIRONMENT

In this project, I propose a potential avenue of increasing customer engagement for retail spaces by exploring the applicability of low-resolution projected pixels in a spatially-aware multi-surface retail space. The primary goal of this project is to investigate ways of engaging users to interact with information in a virtual space.

INTERACTIVE LEARNING WITH PROJECTED DISPLAYS

For this project I present the design of an interactive game in a projection enhanced MSE for young children in order to explore engaging children in learning. The game begins simple for children to spark the learner’s interests but can be scaled as they progress. At the end of this project, I developed a working prototype of an interactive educational projection based game.

EXPLORING MULTI-SURFACE INTERACTIONS IN RETAIL ENVIRONMENTS

In this paper, we present our early work in exploring the applicability and interaction space of spatially aware multi-surface environments in a retail space. We give an overview of our prototype designed with an industry partner, followed by early feedback on the role of multi-surface environments and interactions in the retail space.
